Before I got into the website/digital marketing business, I was writing proposals and marketing pieces for a small communications company. And since marketing was my responsibility, I was charged with creating the company's first website ... with zero budget.
I was clueless!
I had seen all the same commercials for "free" and "easy" web site builders as you have seen.
"Build a professional website in under an hour"
and
"No skill? no time? ... no worries!"
So I thought "how hard can it be?"
I soon found out that it's not as simple as they lead you to believe.
Sure, I could put something together that looked half decent ... but there was no way it would ever show up in web searches for my services? Potential customers would never find it unless they already knew my company name or website address.
If your website can't be found in online searches for your services, what the hell good is it???
Here's an ugly truth:
Creating a website that looks good is easy. Creating a website that gets found online and gets you customers takes a lot of skill and a lot of time.
That's not all.
In addition to the website, consider the other factors that contribute to the effectiveness of your online presence: SEO, directory listings, backlinks, social media, paid search, content production, building authority ... and it gets overwhelming!
Those free website folks never mentioned any of that did they???
Anyways, to cut a long story short [too late!], that first website sucked!
It looked great and my boss was super happy—but it didn't get us even one customer.
I doubt that anybody outside of the company even saw it!
But, I learned a lot during the process.
And over the next few years I worked hard to learn all that I possibly could about what it takes to have a successful web presence.
